Actually, Vienna Virginia, but I got your attention. A small group of ex-KAHS students and their spouses met at 7 p.m. on September 13, 1997, at the Panjshir II restaurant in Vienna for an evening of good food and fellowship. While many were strangers to those sitting at the table, the simple fact that we all shared some past experiences in common was enough to make this a fabulous evening.
Panjshir II, an Afghanistan restaurant, served up some exquisite meals from their menu—dinners of beef, chicken or lamb served ke-bob or in a light cream sauce. Attendees at the dinner get-together were:
Doug Campbell ('72) and his wife Trish John Hanna's brother and Karima's sister were with separate parties already at the restaurant when we got there. They couldn't stay for the dinner but stopped by anyway. Things of note overheard at the dinner: John Hanna and his wife Michelle both attended KAHS: they were voted King and Queen of the Homecoming—one of the few KAHS couples to marry. Michelle's brother Burley who also attended KAHS was just picked up as Senior Foreign Officer, making him one of the youngest people in the history of the State Department to get such a ranking. Congrats Burley!! Karima, whose father is Moroccan and retired with his family in Lawrence, KS, was there when the school closed in 1976. Actually, they had planned to close the school in 1975 but at the last moment decided to keep it open one more year. This meant scurrying about trying to get all the needed books, etc., for another year of high school. Karima is helping on the Year 2000 Reunion by getting a bus tour of the old base lined up, including a look at our old high school. On a personal note, I had sold my 49cc Flandria to a teacher when I left Morocco. According to Dave Bass, she promptly ran it into a tree and was scared of it from then on--so she sold it. Now I know who she sold it to: Tom White! Still leaked oil, but all Flandria's did, didn't they?! So, a nice quiet dinner full of old and newly found friends. Just another mini-reunion, like those that have popped up at other places around the United States. By the end of the dinner, a promise from John Hanna that the next mini-reunion would be a Bar-B-Q at his house! |
