Hurricane News

Debbie (Gerth) Smith passed away this morning (September 12, 2005) at 3:15am after being admitted to the hospital for transfusions two days ago. As many of you know, she was the primary point of contact for putting the 2005 New Orleans Reunion together and although stuck in a wheelchair, she did all she could to make the reunion happen, including attending. The hurricane didn't get her but the cancer did. She and her boyfriend Tony lost everything in the hurricane. Details on her upcoming service will be posted on this site.

Offers for help from various alumnae are at the bottom of the page.

Glenda (Mathis) Sammon (Class of 1957). Lives at 2419 Oxford Place, Gretna, LA . Found

"This is Glenda Sammons. Just want everyone to know that my family and I are safe and completely out of the New Orleans area. As a matter of fact, I am in Texas at the home of my dear friend Sherrie Hendrix. My home was spared from the flooding, but I have no way of knowing if it has damage or if looters have destroyed it. It's a very traumatic feeling to think I may not have a home to go to. I have no information on Debbie Smith, who lives down the street from me. I pray that she did evacuate and is safe."

"I was able to go back to New Orleans on Monday to see my house. I have minimal roof and some outside damage, no looters got me. I have power but no internet service." Glenda will be back in Houston for the next several weeks, caring for her grandchildren while her daughter-in-law works at her employer's branch office there.

"Phone rings but no one picks up and no voicemail.".

Jody Smallwood, 304 43rd St., Gulfport, MS. Phone doesn't ring. I believe most of the Smallwood family, including parents live in the same Gulfport area.

Hi Doug, my brother Larry in FL has been in contact with Jody Smallwood inGulfport. The entire family living in Gulfport are OK. Most took refuge inOklahoma, but are now back. Jody has 1/2 of his roof gone, but I understandthat most of the water damage was limited to the upstairs. They arecurrently living in the habitable space of the house.

Audrey (Smallwood) Ley

Paul Collins (Class of 1972): Lives at 104 Pecanwood Drive, Long Beach, MS. Had a friend with a working phone call Paul's family on Tuesday saying he was OK but he lives in Long Beach, MS (5-10 miles west from downtown Gulfport right on the water) near a levee and some train tracks. There has been no word from him since and the levee may have breached.

"We're OK because we live north of the railroad tracks and that's what stopped the surge coming any further inland. We lost our garage and there's some holes in the roof, but we have electricity, our phones work and Paul has been called back to work (he's retired Navy SeaBee but now works at WalMart)."

Bill Bradley (Class of 1973), 15081 Eleanor Dr., Gulfport, MS. No phone rings.

I got hold of Bill Bradley in Gulfport this morning. His family and sister Cheryl are fine. He considers himself and family very lucky, his home is still standing w/just minor leaks. He works for Miss. Power, he's very busy. Bill said he saw Jody Smallwood just before the hurricane but hasn't heard anything since.

Deborah (Gerth) Smith (Class of 1973), 2459 Oxford Place, Gretna, LA.

Details on her upcoming service will be posted on this site.

"Debbie's wish was to be cremated. Her son will have a service for the family in Baton Rouge when everything is ready. Tony Reeves, her boyfriend, will have a memorial service for her when he can get things together in New Orleans. Information on accepting donations in Debbie's name will be forthcoming."

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Debbie (Gerth) Smith's final expenses are more than Tony can handle and so, fellow alumni, if you can spare a few dollars, please send a check made out to Allyn Collins and mail it to the following address:

Allyn Collins
802 8th Street South
Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250

Please be sure to mark "KAHS gift for Debbie Smith" in the memo line.

Allyn will deposit the checks and get a cashier's check (many banks are still closed) made out to Tony so that Tony can use the money to pay her final expenses. A big thank you to everyone in advance."

Terese (Gargiulo) Evans (Class of 1974), 2576 Audubon Place, Biloxi, MS.
"Phone does not ring when dialed." .

Cheryl Bradley Woodward (Class of 1974), 413 East Third Street,
Long Beach, MS. Unknown.
Phone does not ring.

For Cheryl (Bradley) Woodward - "Cheryl lives 3 blocks from the beach and according to Paul Collins (Class of '72) who also lives in Long Beach, MS, there is nothing left that close to the beach except for concrete slabs that the houses use to sit on. Have not been able to find out anything on any of the Bradleys since the storm."

Bob Whitaker, Jr., (Class of 1976) 1865 Lakeland Dr. #204,
Jackson, MS.
Always busy signal.

Saw my name listed on the KAHS website as being affected by Katrina and wanted to advise that my family and I are fine. Up here in Jackson we were mostly just inconvenienced by downed trees, power outages and long gasoline lines; some had minor damage. Bob

Wayne Lawson (Class of 1961), 2802 Pinewood Dr., Waldorf, MD. "My brother Tom lives in Slidell (LA) and got out OK." - Thanks to Anita Foreman (Class of 1964) for passing this info along.

I have an empty house in Sarasota. My brother Frank has the key. It will accomodate a family of 4-5 members. Except for the kitchen, the house is literally empty, but if anyone wants to use it, I will also provide $5,000 to buy basic furniture.

Best regards,

This has many boards that have been set up online. I found the above link on the NASA site, which has a great deal of satellite and meteorological photos and scientific images from several national agencies of the hurricane and the affected area. This can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/lookingatearth/hurricane_2005.html
